Which early School of Psychology do you like?

While the text reading (p. 2-16) on the early schools are limited in this chapter, there is enough to give you a general idea of what their main approach is to human behavior. Tell me which one makes the most sense to you and would likely be the most "modern."

Please post a response by Thursday, February 5.

  2. Today there are many different areas that psychologists study. The newest modern day perspective is the Evolutionary Perspective. It helps people adjust to their environments to survive and pass those abilities onto their children. Charles Darwin is behind this perspective. There are many things to adapt to as we grow, but the things we learn all depend on the environment we live in and the experiences that we go through each and everyday.

  3. The one that makes the most sense to me, and the most modern, would be the Evolutionary Perspective. It is very interesting, because overtime, we learn how to adapt to our surroundings so we can survive. We pass our adaptation survival skills onto our descendants and so on. The environment that surrounds us, is what shapes who we are, and is what helps us learn to adapt to our surroundings.

I must agree with both Jess and Lauren and the study of the evolutionary perspective. I think this perspective makes more sense because the everyday people act the way they do depending on their surroundings. If someone is raised in a respectful home and town where they are kind to all people no matter skin color or race, they will grow up to be the same respectful person. If someone is raised by a cruel family and in a bad neighborhood where people are racist, that person will learn and develop to be racist or a danger to society because of the way they were raised. The way Darwin’s theory is explained is the way people survive and the environment. People learn to adapt and grow because of the place they live in. This is the perspective that makes more sense to me because I think the way I act is because of the way my parents raised me. My surroundings have made me who I am today and that is what the evolutionary perspective describes.

I also agree with all three of your arguements but i believe that the cross-cultural perspective is the most modern and truest of the different types of psychology, Because depending on were you live has a strong affect on how you react in certain situation and how you process things. A good example is how people in certain tribes in Afrca deal with death. Some of the tribe have celebrations to mourne the death of someone they loved, But in America people Feel depressed and sad. That shows how many people think differntly depending on their geological position. Also the example of how the people in China work harder when working in a group and how the people in america work harder when they are working alone. That shows how they way people act depends on where they live

  6. Jessica, Lauren and Dave are right in their arguments however, i must agree with Nick more that the cross-cultural perspective is the most modern in psychology. The environment you live in most definately hase a role in how people react to different things. In some aspects cross-cultural and the evolution perspective seem to have many similarities in what both are trying to say. They both deal with the environment you are in so i must say i'm split 50/50 on this one but both are definately the most modern.

  7. Although you all bring up good points, I thought this question was asking which one of the early schools (Structuralism, Functionalism, Psychoanalysis or Behaviorism)is the most modern and makes the most sense to us. If that is the case, I think that Freud's Psychoanalysis makes the most sense to me because in the experiment we did in class, most of us added the word "Sleep" to our list of 12 even though it was not actually present. In addition, this School of psychology looked into past influences of a person's behavior, such as Childhood Abuse or past incidents that could be affecting someone's actions or words unconsciously. However, if I misinterpreted the question and in fact we were supposed to talk about which perspective we thought made the most sense then I would have to agree with Nick and say that the Cross-Cultural Perspective is the most sensible and modern because it takes a look at how different cultures affect behavior. I feel as though this one is the most modern because today, there are so many different things going on in the world that affect people's behavior and by looking at their cultures and where this behavior could possible be derived from is a great approach to psychology.

  8. On the contrary to the popular belief in Freudian psychology, it was the behaviorist who stated, "the goal was to discover the fundamental principles of learning--how behavior is acquired and modified in response to environmental influences." I feel this is the most sensible approach to psychology, for it shows that behaviors of human beings and their stimuli must be measured in order to fully understand the psyche of an individual. This concept rejects the ideas of unconscious influences on human behavior, which I believe is true. Most actions a person makes in his/her lifetime are influenced by measureable experiences they have had, and have a conscious influence on the human being because they know exactly why they are fealful or attracted to something. For these reasons, I defend the concept of behaviorism.

  9. I would have to say i am a believer in the evolution perspective. I feel that a persons behavior and/or actions are a reflection of their enviorment as a child. For example, i have this friend (zak) who was tortured as a child by his older brothers. This made him very familiar with the agressive and violent personality. My friend now enjoys being somewhat violent and confrontational, and he feels this is due to how he grew up with his older brothers. People evolve and adapt to survive or succeed in life. This is human nature, and most of us adapt to our enviorment for the better without even realizing it.

  10. I believe that all the perspectives in psychology come together to form our "modern" view of human behavior. Our text states that "Psychology is the one discipline that uniquely encompasses the complex interplay between interpersonal, biological, interpersonal, and socio-structural determinants of human functioning" (pg 11)Because of all these factors coming together, psychologists are able to understand a patients way of thinking and understanding, not just from one element of their life. I think that the easiest perspective to understand is the behavioral perspective, because it looks closely at ones actions. I disagree with Steve in the fact that a persons behavior is only a refection of their environment as a child. I feel that natural selection and survival of the fittest is based on other elements. Some people are driven to succeed based on their goals, and will do so. However others may not be driven to be as successful as the last, but they are not penalized in any way such as going extinct.

  11. The one that makes sense to me, would to be the Evolutionary Perspective. Because it only makes sense that we adapt overtime to our surroundings so we can live better and longer lives. The Environment plays a huge role in how we are as human, and it structures us to be who we are and that pattern continues to get past down.

I have to agree with Zedy on this one, although everyone else has great views, but the Evolutionary Perspective is very true seeing how it effects evryone. Jacob McCall did his exhibiton project on Nature and ho it effected humans and he proved many valuable points. Therefore nature plays a huge roe in the way we grow up and play a big part on how we end up.

The school of psychology that makes the most sense to me is the Evolution idea. I also believe this theory is detrimental to our surroundings and life ahead. This theory is important to comprehend because it helps to understand how our world was potentially created. Although this theory is very controversial, I believe that it is still important to know about and to form your own opinions about.

  14. I must agree with the majority of the class and say that the evolutionary perspective. its developed by charles darwin and talks about the evolution process where each species compete for survival but have inherited differences. it is a very sharp way of looking at where we come from and is completely possible and understandable to understand why some animals traits are close to ours and farther apart and how they can be alike as well.

  15. I believe that the Evolutionary perspective is most modern and also makes the most sense to me. Everyday we change because of the environment around us and many times our opinions on certain subjects also changes. We all fight for our survival in that we work towards higher jobs and higher salaries so we can better support our families. Also in high school you see boys fight for the same girl it may not be so that they can create a child but ultimately that is where it is headed. Also I think that Darwin was on to something when he created this theory because all of the things we do are so that the species survives but we also want to put our individual mark on society.

  16. I think that Freuds psychoanalysis is the best early method because with all the experiments that we did in class, we fell right into the traps. Like the sleep experiment, we all added the word "sleep" when it wasnt even there.

  17. I think the evolutionary perspective is the one that makes the most sense. Species (humans) competing for survival makes sense. We adapt to our environment. Without it we won’t be able to survive in our society. People do it all the time. They change their clothes or their personalities so they can be “cool”. If we don’t do most of the things society wants we wont get anywhere in life. If you show up for a job interview wearing some strange outfit, even though you love it, your boss most likely won’t look past that. I agree with Bitty’s example of the boys fighting over the girl. They fight because they eventually want to mate the one they want. They raise their kids the way they think is right and past down traditions so they can fit into society.

  18. Im going to have to go with slicknickog on this one. Cross cultural perspective is most interesting to me especially now that i just saw the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy in scoiology this allows me to see how different life can be on somewhere i have no knowlege of compared to where i live.
