I think that all of Freud's theories are true but to me the oral stage is the most realistic of the 5. I think that it has the most true examples because everytime i see a baby it has something in its mouth. Everytime a baby gets a new toy the first thing it does is put it in its mouth and you can tell if its getting pleasure because it will either smile or take it out. The part that i dont think is all the way true is the phallic stage because ya little kids do like to touch theirself, but in the book it says that 6 year olds like to masterbate and i think that is a little early for most kids.

  2. Nick is correct in discussing the phallic stage. I also feel that the ages shown in the book are a little earlier then they should be. I feel as if the oral stage is the most accurate out of the 5 as well. EVERYONE goes through the oral stage, and realizes that. However, the other stages i feel only apply to certain people and not everyone.

  3. What makes the most sense to me about Freud's theory, is that babies get pleasure from their mouth. They like putting anything in their mouth, no matter what it is. That is why babies enjoy binkies so much. The theory that made least sense to me was the anal stage. I know that by learning to go to the bathroom, the baby then has the power, but I don't really think that babies and toddlers feel very powerful when they are trying to use the toilet.

  4. I must agree with nick, steve and lauren that the first stage, the oral stage, is the only one that makes the most sense to me. The one thing i disagree with during this stage is the oral passive and oral agressive because i feel that it depends on the persons personality not whether they were fed early or not.For the rest of the stages i must agree with what steve siad that it only applies to certain people and not everyone because i feel everyone is different, not every single person in the world grows up going through the same things, it just doesn't happen.

As everyone knows infants need to be fed by their mother to survive. Therefore, the oral stage would make the most sense. It's a crucial element to the lives of infants to survive but yet also to the mother nursing the infant. However, as stated in the other blogs I believe the phallic stage is totally different. Not everyone needs this to survive. I don't necessarily agree with this stage because I feel as though its more of a want then a need, unlike the oral stage.

  6. In the conclusion of Freud's theories, I have come to a somewhat of an understanding of what he really believed in. There are five stages of the Psychosexual Development but only the oral stage makes the most sense to me. Like many people stated in their blogs, this stage is the most important to survive. Once a baby is born, it will need to be cared for and fed. Every baby needs food and to suck or chew on something because they are curious. The conflict though would be to actually find the right time to start weaning the baby off of that bottle or breast. The stage that makes the least sense to me would be the Anal stage. I know that obviously everyone goes to the bathroom but I feel that this shouldn't be a stage in Freud's Theory. Its not as important as being fed the right foods to survive or producing babies and having power as in the Phallic Stage.

  7. i think the oral stage is the most clear to me
my sister has a one year old baby and I help her take care of her when i see my sister
and ever since she was little, and ive seen this in other babies,
they constantly try putting there toys in there mouth or anything they can get there hands on
and its such a natural thing because the babies dont even have an ideal sense of the use of there hands where to they are practicly oblivious that its even a part of them or that they control it.

I agree with Steve and Nick because everyone goes through the oral stage. The only thing is half the people or many people don’t get over it. Many days I still put pens in my mouth especially during school. Most of the time I have an object or water bottle near my mouth because of the fixation. Although many people get over it, I still feel that many people whether they know it or not put stuff in their mouth because of the oral stage and its fixations. It’s enjoyable and I feel that it is the most realistic because we still see it today.

I agree with mostly everyone else when they say the oral stage. This stage is common, and everyone goes through it as a young child. We find pleasure from putting things in our mouth, whether it be a bottle, a toy, or our hands, all babies put things in their mouth.

As almost everyone has commented so far, I agree; the oral stage in development makes the most sense. Babies are constantly putting things in their mouths, many times out of curiosity and/or to pacify. But it is clear that this 'habit' gives these babies pleasure. If one attempts to take away something a baby is chewing on, they may find that if the baby is left empty-handed, they are dealing with an unhappy, crying baby. Maybe this oral stage is not just for pleasure, but for sense of security as well...

  11. Personally, most of Freuds theories made sence to me. All of them except for the sleeping with out parents one. I still find that hard to believe. But none the less, Freud was a brilliant man and I think that all of the stages he came up with, about what we go through as children up to adulthood, made a lot of sence. All of the stages (oral, anal, phallus etc.) can be seen some how just about daily. Babies always have tihngs in their mouths and so do toddlers who havent grown out of that oral "stage" yet. Personally i remember that I used to have an oral fixation where I used to suck on my thumb. It's pretty common I guess since a lot of young kids do it but it took me some time to get over it. Also I know people who always need to be chewing on something, straws for instance or a pen cap. The stages theory that Freud came up with made the most sence to me out of all of them and I agree with him and all of his reasoning behind them.

  12. All of the stages make sense to me. I would, however, tweak the penis envy theory a bit. I think that girls are jealous of the power that men have over women. Children often see their fathers as the head of the family because they have a closer bond with the mother. I think because the mother nurtures the child that she looses the child's respect. On the other hand the father is the one that is distant from the child because they do not have a special nurturing bond.

  13. Both Steve and Nick are correct in discussing the phallic stage. I agree with both of them. I feel that the ages shown in the book are drawn up a little to early. As far as the oral stage, age 5 is just about accurate. Like Steve said, everyone goes through the oral stage in their life an will know it. At the same time, the other stages apply to the type of person you happen to be.

I do believe that Freud is very important to psychology. Although he has come up with some outlandish theories, his work is still revelent today. Many people may not have a conscious belief that they want to have a sexual relationship with their parents, but unconsciouslly they might. Freud's stages of development and dream analysis are still very important to psych today and without freud, we may have never figured this out.

  15. Again, i think Freuds idea that sex is the most important mechanisim in life is the most important because its true. Again, it keeps humanity going strong. The idea that we want our parents is where i CANNOT agree with Freud.

  16. The article, “what Freud Got Right”, was what made the most sense to me about everything I learned about him. From the textbook and the lessons in class I don’t think things such as the phallic stage, latency stage and genital stage make much sense. I understand what Freud is trying to say about them but I don’t believe that they are true. They are unnecessary and don’t really go along with the way a child will grow up. I agree with the other students when they say the oral stage makes the most sense. Babies always have things in their mouths, whether it is bottles, fingers, or toys. The stages that affect each person will be different. Everyone is different so some stages maybe happen to children and affect them a certain way while other may not really have much to do with a child’s development. The Freud’s theory I agree with least is that we want to have a sexual relationship with the opposite sex parent. I love my dad to death but I have always been closer to my mom. Overall I don’t agree with him. I can see where he gets the ideas from, but I don’t find them to be all completely true.

I have to agree with nick on this one. The oral stage is the one that makes the most sense to me. I wil admit i mut have a minor oral fixation. im always chewing gum or im chewing on a pen cap. This is tru also with smokers. When they quit they need something to fight the oral fixation other than the nicotine. So you see alot off smokers that are quitting; they have a lollipop or a toothpick in thier mouths.

  18. I couldn't disagree with Nick,Steve, TJ, and Steve more now. I was a very passive person when I was younger in terms of what I put in my mouth. I wasn't a binky kind of guy nor did I learn through my mouth. In fact, I was a picky eater, so I was very hesitant in terms of putting things in there. However, I've begun to notice more now than ever, I do not hesitate to speak my mind but I don't have an special affiliation with gum or anything chewy, therefore I find Freud's theory on the Oral stage a little hard to follow. On the contrary, due to my own personal experiences, it is very easy to follow his theory on the Anal stage of a person's life.

  19. I also noticed now that I said Steve's name twice. Apparently I disagree with him twice as much as everyone else.
