Jung v. Erikson

We may not have able to cover any of Erikson's theory but we will shortly. However, based on the text reading, compare Jung to Erikson and decide which one makes more sense. Be sure to give supporting evidence to justify your choice.

For Jung he talks about the unconscious and reflects on Freud’s work while adding some of his ideas. He talks about the anima and animus which I think makes a lot of sense because many people can once in awhile show their opposite side. When a guy lets a girl put on makeup or cries to their friend about a girl. Girls play football with the guys or being the only girl with a bunch of guys and doing what the guys do. That’s why a guy would rather date a girl that goes shopping a lot and does mostly girly stuff because they want that other side. A tom boy isn’t as attractive because a guy would think of her too much as a friend like another guy. The Anima and Animus makes the most sense to me because it shows that some people aren’t afraid of the other side of themselves and others hold back to try and prove they are manlier than others. Guys try to act tough so they don’t show their sensitive side.

  2. Carl Jung Believed that every person that has ever lived had a collective unconscious which we talked about in class where everyone has a connection to everyone else, but it was the matter of interpreting this and digging things out of it. he also believed in the two personality types of introverts who focus there attention on thereself while extraverts express themselves to others. another important thing he believed in was that everyone had an archetype of the opposite sex, where every mad had a feminine side called his "Anima" while females all have a masculine side called "Animus." Although extremely interesting, Jung has no scientific background to his beliefs.
Next Erik Erikson believed that people strive off the creation of their identity. Basicly, he theorizes that throughout life we mold who we are through identity diffusion to create the identity of our own. The downside of his theory is that it doesnt have any perception on how we act.

Both theories I find believable and understandable but I like Jung's outlook and find it very interesting on how he thinks we can tap into such a deep unconcious. I also like Jung's theory because it gives us a reasoning to why it seems like we have unbelieveable coincidences at times that we have all experienced.

  3. In my opinion Erikson's psychosocial development theories focuses on how we develop to become independ people and learn from our parents on how we should live our lives when we get older becuase we're likely to follow the morals that were thought to us and then the older we get the more we reflect on the way we lived our life and what we can do to make the world better for the next generation. Carl Jung however believed in the collective unconscious which means that everyone in the world is connected to everyone in one way or another and that the experiences we go through are the sameone's that were shared by our ancestors.
I think that Eriksons psychosocial theories makes alot of sense because as we grow older we learn from what our parents do and what they teach us and those are the lessons we are also more likely to pass on to our kids. Also as we get older we reflect on things we did and those help us make choices later on in life. However Jung's theory on the anima and animus also makes sense because i beleive every make hase a femine side and every female has a muscaline side. Boys are thought not to let their feelings show as much as girls do but i honestly don't see anything wrong with that because everyone has feelings and you can't just bottle it all out you just have to let it out sometimes. I must disagree with what dave said about how boys aren't normally attracted to girls who are alittle muscaline because just like boys there's absolutely nothing wrong with a girl showing their muscaline side and if a boy really likes a girl it wouldn't matter if they were more muscaline than most girls.

  4. Both of these theories are very interesting, but I like Jung's theory. He believes that every man has a feminine side, and every women has manly side. It is absolutely true. There are men that cry after a sad romance movie, and there are girls that play sports and are very tough just like guys usually are. Erik Erikson's theory about how we mold ourselves into the person we want to be was very interesting as well. I have seen people do that. Like when a girl will pretend to like something that she doesn't just to get someones attention. There are a lot of people who are insure of who they really are, so it isn't so hard to believe that they would mold themselves into something just to fit in.

  5. Jung and Erikson's theories are connected in some way. Jung took Freud's theory of psychosexual development and added more of his own idea's and beliefs into it. These theories are similar because they both reflect on an individuals behavior and how we survive in the world. Jung and Erikson believed in the anima and animus. This described men and womans behavior within its opposite sides. A man has a more feminine side to them as well as a woman has a more manly side to them. This can explain how relationships really work and why people always say that opposites attract. These two beliefs are the ones that make the most since to me. Men and woman are different in some ways but can also be similar in other ways as well.

  6. Archetypes are best defined as the mental images we create of universal themes, such as a hero and a villain. Most people attempt to try and meet the requirements and traits of these people, whether it is undergoing an act of kindness to seem more like a hero or littering on the road purposely to seem badass, people attempt to fill these roles. Carl Jung believed that these archetypes are contained in the collective unconscious that is shared by all people and reflects what we view of society.
Erickson's theory, though less convincing to me, still has many good points. It mentions that each stage of person's life is altered with either positive or negative consequences, depending on how each person deals with these conflicts. such conflicts include trust vs mistrust and intimacy vs isolation, which are relevant, but I feel that humans are shaped more by their goals (archetypical perfections) than their conflicts. Who they strive to be causes such conflicts.

  7. I think that Erikson is the psychologist that I agree with the most. Jung has a good point that there are many coincidences in life that may not be exactly by accident. But he is not able to prove his theory because we will never know if that was in our unconcious at the moment. Also Erikson's theories are able to be proved by experiences by many people.

As "Davey, prettyboyhoey" says i also feel that Jungs idea of the anima and animus is a good example but unlike "Prettyboyhoey" i dont feel that Jung thought of this by figuring out why guys like girl that are not "tomboys" but i feel that Jung was using this as a way of stating that boys and girls both have similar sides. As we learn in biology when a fetus is in the 1st trimester it is still unknowable if the baby will become a boy or a girl. This is because the fetus has the ability to be either girl or boy because the parts are there to develop to either one. And as Jung is saying that fact (easily learned in a science or even at a local parenting class) could also be used in the field on personality. A man and female could both have aspects of their personality that are the same, not because they grew up in the same "hood" but because these "personality characteristics" could all be in all of use just waiting to be shown to the encompassing world. Erikson on the other hand kind of breaks of from Jung's copy-catting off of Freud and came up with ideas that are more relatable to people with not such a perverted mind. Erikson gave the idea that people dont pick their personality before they can buy liquor but instead their personality is ever-changing with the actions and changes that take place in their life. I agree with Erikson becuase there are many defining points in everyones life that could change the way they view the world. Not only just if someone lost a loved one but many kids throughout their grade school years pick on they kids that have mental retardations or learning disabilities, but when the kids that pick on the handy-capped kids grow up they could have a child that is also born with a healt problem or disability that could change the ways they treat people and talk about people. so between the two I pick Erikson because his theories are more accurate in assesing people because Freud and Jung's theories could not be used on as wide a range of people as Erikson's theory could be.

  9. I think that Erikson's theory is easier to understand. I believe what Erikson said concerning how your life is molded depending on conflicts you face. For example, most people would be affected by something tragic that happened in earlier years of their life, and that shapes the person they become. Jung's theory about the anima/animus also makes sense, however I can relate to Erikson better.

  10. I think that you need to pay attention to both their ideas because you cant get the full idea of psychology without both views. You cant be one sided because you wont get the full subject matter.

  11. I agree with Jung on this one. Coincidences arent always just coincidences, in my opinion. I've had a lot of instances where things have happened where i had thought about them briefly before hand. Things that take place that for a second youd think would never happen, but then a minute later it does happen. I believe that people are connected somehow and do think along the same paths, just some more inteligently than others maybe. Youll notice this the more you tihnk about it. Thing will happen that have no explanation and youll realize that you may have thought of that happening. Jung says that we're all connected "telepathically" somehow and i agree with him due to my ownn experiances.

I have to go with Erikson on this one. He is the one who makes the most sense to me. yes Jung has some valid points, like were thinking about someone and all of a sudden we get a phone call and its who we were thinking about. But how can he prove that? He can't. Thats why i belive more with Erikson.

  13. I think parts of both Jung and Erikson make sense. Jung agreed with Freud on many things but then made some theories of his own. He claimed that we are all connected somewhere deep in the unconscious. He believed that when we think about someone and then they show up in our life, it is not just a coincidence. I agree with that because it has happened to me so many times. It’s hard to explain because you never know just how it happens. I agree with Erikson when he says that through out life we will be molding how we grow and our personalities. They are never really set in stone. Experiences and how we learned from our parents shape who we will be. Meanwhile Jung claims that since we are all connected we are experiencing things that others did and that is also helping us shape who we are and who we will be.

  14. I believe strongly in the theory that all sex's tend to express the traits of the opposite sex at one point or possibly even daily. With times modernizing and woman are doing more and more things compared to back in the day when they werent allowed to do much woman are doing more things, alot of these things allow women to really express their masculine traits in having to take charge in the more powerfull jobs. Men aswell are taking jobs these days that in the old days they probobly would havebeen made fun of for. This allows them to express more of a soft feminine side in their everyday life.

  15. In my opinion Erikson's theory makes the most sense to me. He states that from the experiences in someones life it causes them to be who they are today. Good or bad. Although Jung's theory also makes sense and is relatable in today's society, I have to stay with the beliefs of Erikson since that is what makes the most sense to me.

  16. I really like how jessicab just easily complimented both theoriest how one shows the behvioural and how we survive . I'm trying to type a paper but I keep contradicting them because erikson states that our needs must be met but outwardly forces and jjung states that our needs can be met by outwardly and inwardly forces or do I have this wrong? In trying to compliment them in the way jessicab did that's the point I'm trying to give but I keep contridcting them when it comes to the needs of the individualindividual.

  18. Great post full of useful tips! My site is fairly new and I am also having a hard time getting my readers to leave comments. Analytics shows they are coming to the site but I have a feeling “nobody wants to be first”.
