Reading, p. 186-196

This section tells us the dynamics involved in Pavlov's accidental discovery of Classical Conditioning. Do you believe an understanding of this phenomena gives us insight into certain human behaviors? Which ones? Predict how this concept can be applied to humans.

  1. Pavlov's accidental discovery of Classical Conditioning is a very interesting discovery. I do believe that this phenomena gives us an insight of certain human behavior. We are almost drawn into things that our instincts tell us we need. For instance in Pavlov's discovery, he used a dog and food. The dogs natural instinct is to salivate when he smells or even sees food. We as humans do kind of the same thing, if we do see food we get the urge to eat if we are hungry. This discovery is a very interesting one that does makes the most sense and that it connects so well into our current human behavior.

I feel that the phenomena Pavlov have discovered gives all of us an intriguing insight on human behavior. It shows how our mind and body adapts to different situations in order to survive.
A sad connection I can make is to an abuse victim. In the book "The Child Called It" the main character was an abused child. He showed signs of being conditioned in ways so he can survive the many painful tortures his mother put him through.

  3. Classical conditioning i see as a way to classify how things are trained. essentially classical conditioning is the way we train an animal like a dog where you would tell it to sit and give it a treat. eventually it learns that when it is told to sit and does so, that it was going to be rewarded. This could be applied to humans by how people pick up the ways they act from there parents and how they are brought up.

  4. I believe that Pavlov's discovery was extremely crucial in the world of pshychology. He found out how to train animals in different ways by rewarding them or even punishing them. These sort of treatments, I believe, should be a way of training humans. Not every person in the world is obediant or follows the rules they should but if Classical Conditioning is introdiced into a certain persons life, then they too will be able to be trained (such as the way Pavlov's dogs did) and thus that person will learn. Wether or not punishment is the end result in the conditioning or a reward is what patient gets, I dont think would make a difference in the training; however I do think that wether or not you punish or reward the patient will in turn create a false sence of feeling that the patient will get whenever he or she is induced into that certain situation at any other point in theyre life.

  5. Pavlov and his discovery using dogs was a great stride in the field of psychology. He made a completely accidental discovery that reveals a very obvious universal human trait, which is our association of stimuli with emotions and drives. In his experimental case, his dogs salivated when a bell was ringing and even when food wasnt present they still salivated at the sound of a bell due to their association of food with the sound. The same is true for humans, such as when a bell rings in school, they get up out of their seats to leave. They have associated the bell with leaving therefore whenever they hear the bell regardless of place, humans assume the bell has somedthing to do with motion or leaving.

After reading this section I can now understand the process of classical conditioning better than i did before. The experiment with saivating and the dog has made me realize that this does in fact happen in everyday life. When my dog hears the cubbord that his food is kept in open, he instictivly knows that he will be fed. I do agree that an understanding of classical conditioning can give us insight on certain human behaviors. For example, people can learn more about children if they teach them certain behaviors. I think that if classical conditioning is used effectively, you will be able to know a lot more about the needs of a certain individual. This concept can be used on humans in many ways, such as with children.

i think that pavlov's experiment was one that was essential but also 1 that was easy to find. Many people asociate many thing together. When people go to a baseball game befor they even get there some may think of hotdogs or beer and what not. So i believe that classical conditioning is easy for many to understand and is hard for many to dissagree with.

Classical conditioning is so relatable today. As everyone knows when you train something the way you want it to be it begins to act that way. Just like the rat with the water. After a short time it began to notice that after pressing the lever 10 times a drop of water would be released. This is a clear example of classical conditioning.

  9. Pavlovs accidental discovery of Classical conditioning, in my opinion is something that every human participates in consciously or unconsciously. As humans when we are thought how to do something in one particular way from the time we are born, as we get older our instict is to do that same exact thing. For example when we are younger we are taught that before we cross the street we must look both ways to make sure no cars are coming, and when we get older we instictly check both ways of the street without thinking about it because it just comes to us like an instict.

  10. His accidental discovery of Classical conditioning is very important in understanding human reactions. This shows us that our learning throughout or lives means something for a very long time. I believe that if we are taught to say please and thank you this will be a part of our lives for a long time. Also I think that the brands we decide to use when we are on our own is chosen based on the brands our parents used. Another form of classical conditioning is seen when we are taught how to brush our teeth or how to get dressed. These things stay with us for a long time and it is hard to stop habits that have been in use for many years.

  11. I agree with Elizabeth that classical conditioning is very important in understanding human reactions. Its something that's stuck with us for a long period of time if not a life time. It's customs we learn to get used to from a very young age.

  12. Falling into classic conditioning is something everyone does. Like Mercia said, as a small child we are taught to look both ways when we cross the street and once we are grown up we will do the same thing out of habit. When Little Albert saw a fluffy white rabbit he immediately got scarred because he was used to hearing loud noises whenever one would appear. People are kind of trained liked dogs to follow certain rules. In Palvov’s experiment whenever the dog heard a bell he would salivate because he knew food would soon be coming. Whether you are a human or an animal if something is often he same way you will soon get into the pattern of it and expect a certain thing to happen a.k.a Classic Conditioning.

  13. Pavlov's accidental discovery of Classical Conditioning is very interesting to me. All of us are conditioned, so we all behave in a way that is excepted by society. As a child, if every time I try to pick up a book, I hear some horrible scary noise, then when I grow up, I will not go anywhere near a book. Everyone, at some time in their life has been classically conditioned whether they think they have or not.

  14. Pavlov's discovery of classical conditioning is present in all of us, either consciously or unconsciously. We learn from past experiences in order to get a desired outcome out of a present or future experience. People do not even realize when this conditioning is taking place because a lot of it becomes second nature to us.

  15. Pavlov's discovery of classical conditioning was a very important one, even though it was an accident. We can condition people and animals to do what we want and if used correctly, this is a very powerful tool. Think about it, if you could make everyone do whatever you want through simple conditioning and reinforcement, wouldn't you? I feel as though is used correctly and ethically, this discovery could be one of the most important ever.
