Reading, p. 205-220

After reading about Operant Conditioning, do the following two things:

1. Ask B.F. Skinner 2 questions concerning Operant Conditioning. They can be philosophical in nature or they can be for clarification of something you do not understand.

2. Briefly explain the essential difference between operant and classical conditioning.

Blog is due by Tuesday, April 28.

  1. Skinner, I have learned about your interest in the order of behavior, I was just wondering if you sat back many times and watched how people react to different things, or just how they act on a daily basis? For instance did you sit at a locate park and just observe how people went about their business?
Skinner, my second question to you would be, how did u come about with your idea of the Skinner Box? Was it just and experiment that you wanted to try and it acting worked out good?
Skinners belief on operant conditioning was the basic learning process that involves changing the probability of a response and repeating it. The classical conditioning process was one that involved a more mental process. I believe that operant conditioning was a more successful process because it involves much more then just mental thoughts, it involves physical and mental behaviors that help scientists better understand human behavior as a whole.

  2. Two questions that I would like to ask Skinner, would be how he came up with operate and classical conditioning, and my second question would be why he chose to create the idea of the skinner box? Operate conditioning is just the basic learning process that changes the probability of a certain response, and just doing it over and over. Classical conditioning is more mental than physical.

A few questions that I would like to ask Skinner is what made him come up with his famous "Skinner box". What made him want to create this? How did he go about making this idea an actual peice of experimentation. The main difference between operate and classical conditioning is operate conditioning is more of a learning process where classical conditioning is the action physical response. This helps scientists perform their experiments.

  4. 1. What effects on ones life occur when each of the 4 stimulus situations occur?
    2. Which do you feel works the best of the 4 situations?

In essence, the difference between the two types of conditioning is that classical conditioning elicits a response by use of a stimulus whereas operant conditioning does nearly the exact opposite in that an effect is drawn with the addition of consequences and reinforcement.

  5. The first question i would like to ask Skinner is, how does he no that people are likely to keep repeating an event based on a positive reinforcement? In my opinion if someone did something bad and was rewarded for it i dont think they would do it again because they know it's not the right thing to do. At least that's how i feel about it. The second question i would ask him if he feels that his skinner box experiment would work with any kind of animal?

Classical conditioning in a sense is our ability to perform a task from our insticts because we've been trained that way. Operant conditioning is when we perform a task on our own free will and the consequences of our actions can either be negative or positive.

  6. 1. Does punishment work better than reinforcement?
    2. What happens when a reinforcement is given up or the subject grows out of it?

Operant and Classical conditioning are both very different. The main difference is that classical conditioning is the learned behavior. A neutral stimulus and a response producing stimulus are paired togeteher until the neutral stimulus comes up with the same response. Operant conditioning involves changing the probability of the behavior, becasue you are dealing with intervals and ratios.

The first question i would like to ask skinner is whish of the 4 situations do you feel had the best results? Second i would ask is if he feels that everyone no matter which country or area they're from learns through either classical or operant conditioning? The main difference between classical and operant conditioning is that operant is learning with changes in stimulus and classical conditioning is just a learned behavior

  8. The first question I would ask Skinner would be to have him explain more about why he doesn’t think our internal thoughts, beliefs, emotions or motives affect our behavior. I would think that those things cause us to do the things we do. If not why would we do things if they didn’t have to do with our motives or what we were thinking? My second question has to do with the Skinner Box. Just like most of the other people who commented on this blog I am curious about it. How did it come to be? I am curious what made him think of this process.

Classic Conditioning is the basic learning process that involves repeatedly pairing a neutral stimulus with a response - producing stimulus until the neutral stimulus elicits the same response. Meanwhile Operant Conditioning is the basic learning process that involves changing the probability of a response being repeated by manipulating the consequences of that response.

  9. 1) Which of the 4 situations is the most beneficial in the long run?
    2) Will reinforcers/punishments have different affects on different people or cultures?

I feel as if classical conditioning is more powerful the operent conditioning. With classical conditioning, we learn to adapt on our own, and it remains with us for our whole life. Operant conditioning i feel is a little less perminant, because it is not beded into the unconscious.

  10. 1.) Skinner, since you believe so much in your skinner box approach that you used it on your daughter, do you regret that since society has looked down upon that?

2.) When you look back at the 4 different situations to raise a child, which do you prefer and why?

Classical Conditioning is the basic learning process that involves repeatedly pairing a neutral stimulus with a response - producing stimulus until the neutral stimulus elicits the same response.

Operant Conditioning is the basic learning process that involves changing the probability of a response being repeated by manipulating the consequences of that response.

  11. 1) Questions to BF Skinner:
    a) Which methods do you find best for getting a desired response, positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment by application, or punishment by removal?
    b) Your definition of Discrimitive Stimuluses deals with the nature of an animal learning how to do something because it is taught to, for example picking up a phone when it rings, i can see this as being a little to the use of positive reinforement, such as having a conversation with the person, be the way that we are taught to do the act.

    2) Classical Conditioning was based on the reflexive behavior, or the impulse to do something. Operant Conditioning however, is volentary behaviour which is shaped through reinforcers and punishments.
