One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, part 1

Ok, now that you have seen the first "group session" run by Nurse Ratched, comment on the treatment methodology. Based on what you know about on a number of personality theories, does it make sense to use a group setting to help people confront and overcome their problems? What good, if any, could come from Nurse Ratched's "treatment?"

  1. In my opinion i think it is a great idea to use group setting as a way to help people confront and oversome their probelms. This is because it lets them hear what other people think about the situation their in and give them advise to how to approach it or solve that problem. Also the people in the group can be like a support group and whenever someone has a problem it's always great to have support from other people.

  2. I do agree with Mercia, that it is best to conduct a support group. This is a great way for people to report out on their problems and to have others in the group help each other with that particular situation. Nurse Ratched is a very laid-back person and very mono toned as well. I do believe that these people wont listen to her as much as they would listening to their friends, or the other people in the group. Listening in a group can also help a person observed each other and to give advice when needed. It helps to get people interact with others and to see how they really act in different situations.

  3. After seeing the way that Nurse Retched led the group meeting, I realized that she really didnt do too much to actually try and help the patient. She sat back, asked a question and had one of the other group members reflect on it. For example, they were focusing on one of the members problems he had with his wife and then that member went crazy and started to flip out after what everyone else was saying. So the way she was managing this treatment deffinately wasnt working. She did nothing except start the topic and conversation and then let the group take over. After seeing both sessions having the same outcome, Nurse Retched seems to be purposely trying to get the patients to lash out at each other and sooner or later become even more "insane"

I believe it makes sense to use a group setting to help people confront and overcome their problems. When people sit and discuss problems that they are having, talking to others helps control anger and helps to develope a strong inner self. Like Mercia said, it is a great way for people to overcome their problems. Nurse Retched seams to be a little sneaky at times. She asks quetions and lets them answer them however, does not comment on anything being discussed. She just lets them take over and whether what is being said is crazy or not doesnt not seam to matter to her. In my opinion I think she is not their to help the patients become more civilized, instead she is their to make them angry and vicious at eachother.

  5. I feel as if there were a different therapist/nurse, a single session would be more effective. The patients would not feel embaressed or overwhelmed by the Nurse's questions if it was someone else. However, because Nurse Retched is very commanding and rude, the group session works while she is in command of the ward. I feel that if the members of the group were alone with Nurse Retched, they would be scared of her. Instead, the men are able to interact with eachother and can talk about their problems with their peers, which helps their self-esteem.

I don't think this is a very good method of therapy for these people. The nurse here pushes each personal topic of discussion, even when the person seems to be uncomfortable with talking about it.
Another thing I noticed is that the nurse made up rules as she went, so she would always win
The amount of power she has over the patients are evident when we discovered that majority of the patients are 'voluntary' patients who are voluntarily there.

i think that they should do double sessions and maybe that would would. the double session meaning that they could have miss ratchet do a one-on-one at first and settle half the problems and then maybe when they are ready to confront it around a group of people to show that someone has problems as well if not similar. i think this because sometimes people don't totally agree with everyone knowing their personable problems.

  8. No i don't. I think Nurse Ratched is crazy. I think if you want to confront someone due to their problems, you should do it privately. You shouldn't bring up a group discussion and make a person feel uncomfortable in front of others. She's clearly a controlling figure.

  9. To me, it does not make sense to use a group setting to help me overcome their problems. Obviously, if you need therapy, you don't want to talk to a group about it. I think one on one sessions help a lot more than group sessions do. In an one on one session, you can tell your therapist your problems, and by doing that, you can try to overcome those problems on your own, with a little guidance from your therapist. Nurse Ratchets treatment would just make people embarrased about discussing their problems, and then they could not overcome their problems.

  10. the way nurse ratched is unethical
she talks down to the patients and makes them feel like they have more problems rather then helping them.
and besides the way she does her therapy, the group session is no good because it just installs a feeling of embarressment
for example Billy was asked about how he wanted to marry a girl and ratched puts him down so the others would laugh while Billy tries laughing about it himself rather then approaching what was actually wrong with the situation.

I believe that using a group to talk about they're problems is a good way for the group members to confront their problems. On the other hand i do not believe that the way nurse rached amplifies their problems and trys to make the mambers feel worse about each other has a possitive effect on the members over coming their problems and trying to gain a psychological equalibrium.

  12. I do not believe that a group session is helpful for some personalities. I personally would use a group session to focus on other people because I do not like to focus on myself. This wouldn't help me to identify the problems that I am personally suffering from but would help to put the spotlight on others. This group session could be helpful to those who like to hear from their peers. This specific group session pin points people negatively, however. This is almost like a punishment to get called on by the witch nurse.

  13. I agree with the basic idea Nurse Retched had in the way she had the people talk in a group therapy session, but the way she conducted it was not at all right. Maybe if a different nurse was in charge of the sessions people would have done better. She just sat there and interrogated them with questions, and when the patient tried to tell what happened the other patients would chime in and start to tease and make fun of him for what he said. So they would all gang up against him and that Nurse would just sit there and let them. I do not think that was right at all. She should let the patient finish what he has to say and SHE should ask him more detailed questions about his experience and kind of just keep the men there for moral support. The way Nurse Retched has the group therapy session set up will not do any good for the patients in my opinion.

  14. I feel as if Nurse Ratched wasnt as bad as we are making her sound. i feel the only thing she did wrong was to earn the trust of her patients and get individual relationships between them. i feel as if everything she was trying to teach them was going in one ear and out the other because she had not yet earned the trust of the people she was working with. I believe she needed to be strict, which she was, but she also needed to get to know her patients better. Without that trust, there was no hope.

  15. I feel as though this type of therapy is not helpful for all of these patients, because they are not as emotionally and mentally stable as the rest of society where this method would prove beneficial. Nurse Ratched has made each man feel like less of a man with each session and does nothing to help solve the issues, justs re-visits the problems and makes the patients reflect on them. So i feel as though that no good can come of this

  16. i believe that grupo therapy is a great way to help with disorders. That way the patients are able to express ones fellings with eachother and can solve any problems they are having. also when you have group therapy if you have a problem another person in the group may have a way to help you deal with that issue different from that of the instructor,

  17. i believe some of the group therapy is effective but for some it is a waste of time. Some live in their own world and cant face the facts of reality and cant really get a grasp for whats going on. I believe the only few that may work effectively and see results in talking and group therapy would be mcmurphy, chief, harding and possibly cheswick and taber.
